Gout Pain Can Be Managed

Gout is a painful, inflammatory form of arthritis. Those affected will typically feel an intense stiffness in the joints of their feet, particularly in the big toe. Schedule a visit to learn about how gout can be managed and treated.

Heel pain is a rather common foot problem. The pain will usually occur under the heel, towards the front of the heel, or just behind it, where the Achilles tendon connects to the heel bone. The most common cause of heel pain is plantar fasciitis, which is pain under the heel. Other causes include arthritis, heel bursitis and bumps, tarsal tunnel syndrome, stress fractures, Sever’s disease and Achilles tendinitis. The most common remedies for heel pain are rest, proper fitting footwear and applying ice to the afflicted area. If you are experiencing some kind of heel pain, it is suggested to go see a podiatrist.

Many people suffer from bouts of heel pain. For more information, contact one of our podiatrists of Family Foot & Ankle Center. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Causes of Heel Pain

Heel pain is often associated with plantar fasciitis. The plantar fascia is a band of tissues that extends along the bottom of the foot. A rip or tear in this ligament can cause inflammation of the tissue.

Achilles tendonitis is another cause of heel pain. Inflammation of the Achilles tendon will cause pain from fractures and muscle tearing. Lack of flexibility is also another symptom.

Heel spurs are another cause of pain. When the tissues of the plantar fascia undergo a great deal of stress, it can lead to ligament separation from the heel bone, causing heel spurs.

Why Might Heel Pain Occur?

  • Wearing ill-fitting shoes
  • Wearing non-supportive shoes
  • Weight change
  • Excessive running

Treatments

Heel pain should be treated as soon as possible for immediate results. Keeping your feet in a stress-free environment will help. If you suffer from Achilles tendonitis or plantar fasciitis, applying ice will reduce the swelling. Stretching before an exercise like running will help the muscles. Using all these tips will help make heel pain a condition of the past.

Possible Causes of Heel Spurs

Many patients have pain in the heel area of the foot, and this may be indicative of condition that is known as a heel spur. It is considered to be a bony growth that forms underneath the heel and may be hooked or pointed. It grows toward the middle of the foot and can cause pain in the arch. The symptoms that are associated with heel spurs often include heel pain upon arising in the morning, swelling and heat coming from the affected heel, and the foot may feel achy as the day progresses. It can develop for a variety of reasons. These can consist of an injury that has occurred to the heel, participating in running and jumping activities, and wearing shoes that do not fit correctly. If you feel you may have developed a heel spur, it is advised to seek the counsel of a podiatrist who can determine what the best treatment is for you.

Heel spurs can be incredibly painful and sometimes may make you unable to participate in physical activities. To get medical care for your heel spurs, contact one of our podiatrists from Family Foot & Ankle Center. Our doctors will do everything possible to treat your condition.

Heels Spurs

Heel spurs are formed by calcium deposits on the back of the foot where the heel is. This can also be caused by small fragments of bone breaking off one section of the foot, attaching onto the back of the foot. Heel spurs can also be bone growth on the back of the foot and may grow in the direction of the arch of the foot.

Older individuals usually suffer from heel spurs and pain sometimes intensifies with age. One of the main condition's spurs are related to is plantar fasciitis.

Pain

The pain associated with spurs is often because of weight placed on the feet. When someone is walking, their entire weight is concentrated on the feet. Bone spurs then have the tendency to affect other bones and tissues around the foot. As the pain continues, the feet will become tender and sensitive over time.

Treatments

There are many ways to treat heel spurs. If one is suffering from heel spurs in conjunction with pain, there are several methods for healing. Medication, surgery, and herbal care are some options.

If you have any questions feel free to contact one of our offices located in Raleigh and Henderson, NC . We offer the latest in diagnostic and treatment technology to meet your needs.

Research has indicated that most babies are born with flat feet. This is typically the result of muscles, tendons, and ligaments that have not fully developed yet. When the child starts to walk, it is encouraged to walk barefoot while indoors. The toes will grasp the floor naturally, and this is beneficial in strengthening the entire foot. When walking begins, the foot should be properly measured so the correct size shoe can be determined. It is important for the soles to be flexible, in addition to confirming there is adequate room for the toes to move freely in. Some children will walk with their toes pointing inward or outward. If this pertains to your child, it is suggested to consult with a podiatrist who can properly examine your child’s feet.

Making sure that your children maintain good foot health is very important as they grow. If you have any questions, contact one of our podiatrists of Family Foot & Ankle Center. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Keeping Children's Feet Healthy

Having healthy feet during childhood can help prevent medical problems later in life, namely in the back and legs. As children grow, their feet require different types of care. Here are some things to consider...

Although babies do not walk yet, it is still very important to take care of their feet.

Avoid putting tight shoes or socks on his or her feet.

Allow the baby to stretch and kick his or her feet to feel comfortable.

As a toddler, kids are now on the move and begin to develop differently. At this age, toddlers are getting a feel for walking, so don’t be alarmed if your toddler is unsteady or ‘walks funny’.

As your child gets older, it is important to teach them how to take care of their feet.

Show them proper hygiene to prevent infections such as fungus.

Be watchful for any pain or injury.

Have all injuries checked by a doctor as soon as possible.

Comfortable, protective shoes should always be worn, especially at play.

Diabetic patients may develop serious foot conditions as a result of elevated blood sugar levels. Some people experience neuropathy. Symptoms of this ailment often include a numbing or tingling sensation, and it may be painful to walk. This occurs when the cuts become infected, and if not promptly treated, gangrene may develop. People who are diabetic often notice changes in the feet. These consist of swelling, ingrown toenails, extremely dry skin, and temperature changes. If there are open wounds, it is suggested to keep the area covered and dry, and it may be beneficial to wear a supportive boot. What is Joint Replacement Surgery?

Joint replacement surgery removes damaged or diseased parts of a joint and replaces them with new, man-made ones. Replacing joints can reduce pain and help you move and feel better. Joints usually will need to be repaired when they are damaged from arthritis, overuse, and sometimes disease. After a person has completed the surgery, they are typically required to undergo physical therapy as soon as possible to help strengthen the muscles around the joint and to regain motion in the joint. If you believe you have damaged or diseased joints in the feet or ankles, it is important to consult with a podiatrist.

In certain cases, in which the patient suffers from extreme pain or damage in a joint, joint replacement surgery may be deemed useful. If you have constant pain in a foot joint, consult with one of our podiatrists from Family Foot & Ankle Center. Our doctors will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment.

What Is Joint Replacement Surgery?

Over time, joints wear down; this can be exacerbated by diseases and conditions. Joint replacement surgery, also known as arthroplasty, is when a damaged joint is surgically removed and replaced with a prosthesis. Prostheses, which can be made of ceramic, plastic, or metal, act as joints in lieu of an actual joint. One of the most prevalent causes for joint replacement is arthritis.

Arthritis in the Foot

Arthritis can occur in any joint in the body, including in the feet. Common types of arthritis in the foot are osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and gout. The big toe is usually where arthritis occurs in the foot; this is known as hallux rigidus.

Joint Replacement Surgery in the Foot

The most common form of joint replacement in the foot is a first metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint placement. MTP joint replacement surgery is designed to treat hallux rigidus. Surgery is not intensive, and recovery occurs within one to two months after the procedure has been done. Overall, joint replacement surgery is a safe and effective way to treat pain in the joint of the foot.

Preventing Plantar Hyperhidrosis

Plantar hyperhidrosis is the condition of excessive feet sweating. Hyperhidrosis can be extremely uncomfortable. There are a few measures to take in order to prevent uncontrolled sweating. One method is to log when sweating episodes occur. You may begin to notice that you sweat more when you are in specific situations or eat certain types of foods. Also, be sure to wear the correct socks. You should have different socks for the seasons and for various types of athletic activities. In addition to having the correct socks, choose shoes that are made of lightweight fabrics, such as canvas or leather. Another method is to use antifungal powder or cornstarch on your feet. You may want to apply an antiperspirant to the feet once or twice per week, as well. Finally, stay hydrated. Proper hydration can reduce sweating throughout the whole body. If you believe you may be experiencing plantar hyperhidrosis, be sure to contact a podiatrist who can help treat the affliction.

If you are suffering from hyperhidrosis contact one of our podiatrists of Family Foot & Ankle Center. Our doctors can provide the care you need to attend to all of your foot and ankle needs.

Hyperhidrosis of the Feet

Hyperhidrosis is a rare disorder that can cause people to have excessive sweating of their feet. This can usually occur all on its own without rigorous activity involved. People who suffer from hyperhidrosis may also experience sweaty palms.

Although it is said that sweating is a healthy process meant to cool down the body temperature and to maintain a proper internal temperature, hyperhidrosis may prove to be a huge hindrance on a person’s everyday life.

Plantar hyperhidrosis is considered to be the main form of hyperhidrosis. Secondary hyperhidrosis can refer to sweating that occurs in areas other than the feet or hands and armpits. Often this may be a sign of it being related to another medical condition such as menopause, hyperthyroidism and even Parkinson’s disease.

In order to alleviate this condition, it is important to see your doctor so that they may prescribe the necessary medications so that you can begin to live a normal life again. If this is left untreated, it is said that it will persist throughout an individual’s life.

A last resort approach would be surgery, but it is best to speak with your doctor to find out what may be the best treatment for you.

Flip Flops and Foot Health

Many people enjoy the simplicity of wearing flip flops. They are easy to slip into, which makes them a desirable shoe to wear. Despite their popularity, research has indicated they can be harmful to the feet. The arch is typically absent in this type of shoe, which may cause pain in the feet and ankles. Additionally, flip flops lack shock absorption, and there is minimal cushioning in the heel area. Many people also have to curl their toes which helps to provide stability in these shoes, and this may change the way you walk. It is beneficial wear shoes that have a strap on the back, which aids in supporting the foot. If you would like additional information about how flip flops affect the feet, it is suggested that you consult with a podiatrist.

Flip-flops are not always the best choice of footwear. If you have any concerns about your feet or ankles, contact one of our podiatrists from Family Foot & Ankle Center. Our doctors will assist you with all of your foot and ankle needs.

Flip-Flops and Feet

When the weather starts warming up, people enjoy wearing flip-flops.  Flip-flops are comfortable, stylish, and easy to slip on and off; they're perfect for any summer beach goer.  However, these shoes can cause harm to the feet.

How Can Flip-Flops Affect Me Long-Term?

  • Ankle problems
  • Hip problems
  • Lower back problems
  • Pain in the balls of the feet
  • Problems with foot arches
  • Changes in the way you walk

Are There Injuries Associated with Flip-Flops?

Yes.  Since flip-flops are relatively weak and do not provide the same amount of support as sneakers, people who wear flip-flops regularly are more susceptible to injuries. On top of that, the open nature of the shoe makes your feet more prone to other problems, such as cuts and even infections.  Common injuries and ailments include:

  • Sprained ankles
  • Blisters
  • Infections
  • Cuts and Scrapes

I like Wearing Flip-Flops. Are There Safe Alternatives?

When buying flip-flops, try to find ones that have sturdy soles and that are made of high-quality materials that will support for your feet.  These flip-flops will cost more but will also last longer as a result.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact one of our offices located in Raleigh and Henderson, NC .  We offer the newest diagnostic and treatment technologies for all your foot and ankle needs.

The Feet and Rheumatoid Arthritis

Most people with rheumatoid arthritis experience pain in their feet at some point during their time with the ailment. Understanding the disease and the effects it could have on the feet may help you recognize the problem early and begin treatment. Rheumatoid arthritis is a disease in which the body attacks its own joints. This disease is unique in that many joints may be impacted at the same time. People with the disease may notice the development of bunions, hammertoes, and fallen arches. Additional foot complications affiliated with rheumatoid arthritis include heel pain, pinched nerves, nodules and rashes. The condition is painful and incurable. However, early treatment can help people with the disease control the discomfort and maintain their livelihoods. If you are experiencing any type of foot pain, it is suggested that you consult with a podiatrist.

Because RA affects more than just your joints, including the joints in your feet and ankles, it is important to seek early diagnosis from your podiatrist if you feel like the pain in your feet might be caused by RA. For more information, contact one of our podiatrists of Family Foot & Ankle Center. Our doctors will assist you with all of your podiatric concerns.

What Is Rheumatoid Arthritis?

Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disorder in which the body’s own immune system attacks the membranes surrounding the joints. Inflammation of the lining and eventually the destruction of the joint’s cartilage and bone occur, causing severe pain and immobility.

Rheumatoid Arthritis of the Feet

Although RA usually attacks multiple bones and joints throughout the entire body, almost 90 percent of cases result in pain in the foot or ankle area.

Symptoms

  • Swelling and pain in the feet
  • Stiffness in the feet
  • Pain on the ball or sole of feet
  • Joint shift and deformation

Diagnosis

Quick diagnosis of RA in the feet is important so that the podiatrist can treat the area effectively. Your doctor will ask you about your medical history, occupation, and lifestyle to determine the origin of the condition. Rheumatoid Factor tests help to determine if someone is affected by the disease.
