Whether you are a runner or a walker, the shoes that you exercise in should fit your needs. Stores tend to carry more running shoes than walking shoes, and while a runner shouldn't run in walking shoes, a walker may certainly walk in running shoes. That may sound slightly confusing, but the bottom line is that both runners and walkers can benefit from wearing running shoes while exercising as long as they buy shoes that fit their specific activity. Runners should buy shoes that have more cushioning in the heel and forefoot, while walkers generally don’t need extra cushioning in the forefoot and should opt for something more lightweight. Runners need shoes with a higher difference in height from the heel through the toe called the heel drop, while walkers should choose shoes with a heel drop of less than 8 millimeters. For more information on finding the best footwear for your needs, consult with a podiatrist.
For more information about walking shoes versus running shoes, consult with one of our podiatrists from Family Foot & Ankle Center. Our doctors can measure your feet to determine what your needs are and help you find an appropriate pair of footwear.
Foot Health: The Differences between Walking & Running Shoes
There are great ways to stay in shape: running and walking are two great exercises to a healthy lifestyle. It is important to know that running shoes and walking shoes are not interchangeable. There is a key difference on how the feet hit the ground when someone is running or walking. This is why one should be aware that a shoe is designed differently for each activity.
You may be asking yourself what the real differences are between walking and running shoes and the answers may shock you.
Differences
Walking doesn’t involve as much stress or impact on the feet as running does. However, this doesn’t mean that you should be any less prepared. When you’re walking, you land on your heels and have your foot roll forward. This rolling motion requires additional support to the feet.
Flexibility – Walking shoes are designed to have soft, flexible soles. This allows the walker to push off easily with each step.

A low ankle sprain occurs on the outside of the ankle, and is considered to be a common type of sprain. When the affected ligaments are above the ankle, it is categorized as a high ankle sprain. Common symptoms in both types of sprains include severe pain and discomfort, and it is often difficult to walk. Effective treatment for mild sprains include resting and elevating the affected foot, and this may be helpful in reducing existing swelling. Sprains that are moderate may require the patient to wear a boot, which can be beneficial in stabilizing the ankle as the healing process occurs. Severe sprains may require the patient to undergo physical therapy. If you have endured an ankle sprain, please speak to a podiatrist who can determine what the best treatment is for you.
Ankle sprains are common but need immediate attention. If you need your feet checked, contact one of our podiatrists from Family Foot & Ankle Center. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.
How Does an Ankle Sprain Occur?
Ankle sprains take place when the ligaments in your ankle are torn or stretched beyond their limits. There are multiple ways that the ankle can become injured, including twisting or rolling over onto your ankle, putting undue stress on it, or causing trauma to the ankle itself.
What Are the Symptoms?
Preventing a Sprain
Treatment of a Sprain
Treatment of a sprain depends on the severity. Many times, people are told to rest and remain off their feet completely, while others are given an air cast. If the sprain is very severe, surgery may be required.
If you have suffered an ankle sprain previously, you may want to consider additional support such as a brace and regular exercises to strengthen the ankle.

Read more about Ankle SprainsA swollen ankle can have a variety of causes. Often, your ankle may swell due to trauma caused by an injury, such as a sprain. This type of swelling is usually accompanied by pain and a reduced range of motion. One common reason why the ankle swells in women is due to pregnancy, which is generally not a cause for concern unless the swelling is sudden and excessive. Other causes of swollen ankles can include arthritis, which is usually accompanied by joint stiffness, warmth, and redness, as well as cellulitis, which is a bacterial infection that can cause fever and chills. If you have swollen ankles it is suggested that you speak with a podiatrist, who can diagnose and treat your condition.

Ankle pain is any condition that causes pain in the ankle. Due to the fact that the ankle consists of tendons, muscles, bones, and ligaments, ankle pain can come from a number of different conditions.
Causes
The most common causes of ankle pain include:
Symptoms
Symptoms of ankle injury vary based upon the condition. Pain may include general pain and discomfort, swelling, aching, redness, bruising, burning or stabbing sensations, and/or loss of sensation.
Diagnosis
Due to the wide variety of potential causes of ankle pain, podiatrists will utilize a number of different methods to properly diagnose ankle pain. This can include asking for personal and family medical histories and of any recent injuries. Further diagnosis may include sensation tests, a physical examination, and potentially x-rays or other imaging tests.
Treatment
Just as the range of causes varies widely, so do treatments. Some more common treatments are rest, ice packs, keeping pressure off the foot, orthotics and braces, medication for inflammation and pain, and surgery.

Do you have foot pain, numbness, tingling, or cold feet? If so, you may need to see a podiatrist for vascular testing. Vascular testing in podiatry is used to assess the blood flow to your feet and ankles and to screen for conditions such as peripheral artery disease. One common vascular test is a Doppler ultrasound. This test uses a handheld device that emits sound waves to create an image of how blood flows through your veins and arteries. A Doppler ultrasound is quick, painless, and noninvasive. Typically, you do not need to do anything special to prepare for this test. However, smokers may be asked to refrain from smoking for several hours prior to the ultrasound, as smoking can constrict blood vessels and affect the test results. If you suspect that you may have reduced blood flow to your feet and ankles, it is suggested that you see a podiatrist for evaluation.
Vascular testing plays an important part in diagnosing disease like peripheral artery disease. If you have symptoms of peripheral artery disease, or diabetes, consult with one of our podiatrists from Family Foot & Ankle Center. Our doctors will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment.
What Is Vascular Testing?
Vascular testing checks for how well blood circulation is in the veins and arteries. This is most often done to determine and treat a patient for peripheral artery disease (PAD), stroke, and aneurysms. Podiatrists utilize vascular testing when a patient has symptoms of PAD or if they believe they might. If a patient has diabetes, a podiatrist may determine a vascular test to be prudent to check for poor blood circulation.
How Is it Conducted?
Most forms of vascular testing are non-invasive. Podiatrists will first conduct a visual inspection for any wounds, discoloration, and any abnormal signs prior to a vascular test.
The most common tests include:
These tests are safe, painless, and easy to do. Once finished, the podiatrist can then provide a diagnosis and the best course for treatment.

A corn is a type of callus or hardened skin that develops on the toes and feet due to consistent friction and pressure. Corns appear as raised hard bumps surrounded by dry flaky skin, and they may be tender and painful to the touch. Since corns are typically caused by friction and pressure, the first step in both prevention and treatment, is to wear comfortable properly-fitted shoes that do not irritate or squeeze your foot. Wearing shoe inserts or custom orthotics can provide cushioning and support for the feet. It is said that soaking and moisturizing the feet may relieve some of the pain caused by corns. However, some painful corns do not improve with at home remedies and need to be examined by a doctor. If you have painful corns on your feet it is suggested that you visit a podiatrist.
Corns can make walking very painful and should be treated immediately. If you have questions regarding your feet and ankles, contact one of our podiatrists of Family Foot & Ankle Center. Our doctors will treat your foot and ankle needs.

However, if you find that your feet are often so sweaty that your shoes slip right off, you may have plantar hyperhidrosis. Plantar hyperhidrosis, or excessive sweating of the feet, is a medical condition that affects about 3% of the population. This problem can be embarrassing, but fortunately, there are effective treatments, including application of an antiperspirant, oral medications, and botox injections into the foot. Another proven treatment is iontophoresis, in which the foot is submerged in water that has a low-level electrical current running through it. The electrical current charges ions in the water, which get into the sweat glands in your feet and disrupt their ability to make sweat, ultimately leading to healthy, dryer feet. If you find yourself sweating excessively from your feet, consult with a podiatrist, who can help you select the treatment that is right for you.

Hyperhidrosis of the Feet
Hyperhidrosis is a rare disorder that can cause people to have excessive sweating of their feet. This can usually occur all on its own without rigorous activity involved. People who suffer from hyperhidrosis may also experience sweaty palms.
Although it is said that sweating is a healthy process meant to cool down the body temperature and to maintain a proper internal temperature, hyperhidrosis may prove to be a huge hindrance on a person’s everyday life.
Plantar hyperhidrosis is considered to be the main form of hyperhidrosis. Secondary hyperhidrosis can refer to sweating that occurs in areas other than the feet or hands and armpits. Often this may be a sign of it being related to another medical condition such as menopause, hyperthyroidism and even Parkinson’s disease.
In order to alleviate this condition, it is important to see your doctor so that they may prescribe the necessary medications so that you can begin to live a normal life again. If this is left untreated, it is said that it will persist throughout an individual’s life.
A last resort approach would be surgery, but it is best to speak with your doctor to find out what may be the best treatment for you.

Read more about Hyperhidrosis of the FeetChildren who frequently participate in running and jumping activities may complain about heel pain. It may be indicative of a condition that is referred to as Sever’s disease, which affects the growth plate in the heel. It may become irritated as a result of repetitive motions during specific sporting activities. Parents may notice that their child begins to walk with a limp, and the back of the heel may be swollen. It is beneficial to rest and elevate the affected foot, and it may help to relieve a portion of the pain when the calf muscles are stretched. If your active child complains of heel pain, it is advised that you schedule a consultation with a podiatrist who can properly diagnose and treat Sever’s disease.
Sever's disease often occurs in children and teens. If your child is experiencing foot or ankle pain, see one of our podiatrists from Family Foot & Ankle Center. Our doctors can treat your child’s foot and ankle needs.
Sever’s Disease
Sever’s disease is also known as calcaneal apophysitis, which is a medical condition that causes heel pain I none or both feet. The disease is known to affect children between the ages of 8 and 14.
Sever’s disease occurs when part of the child’s heel known as the growth plate (calcaneal epiphysis) is attached to the Achilles tendon. This area can suffer injury when the muscles and tendons of the growing foot do not keep pace with bone growth. Therefore, the constant pain which one experiences at the back of the heel will make the child unable to put any weight on the heel. The child is then forced to walk on their toes.
Symptoms
Acute pain – Pain associated with Sever’s disease is usually felt in the heel when the child engages in physical activity such as walking, jumping and or running.
Highly active – Children who are very active are among the most susceptible in experiencing Sever’s disease, because of the stress and tension placed on their feet.
